This year, I’ve decided to tackle the Marathon and support my all time favorite organization that truly empowers girls from a very young age – Girl Scouts! I’ve had the privilege of serving as a GS leader for 8 years; of which the last five years have been with my daughter in GCNWI Troop 20729. It’s been an amazing experience planning and running activities, events, and journeys for my 24 girls, who all started out together as Kindergarten Daisies and now are remarkable Juniors! I truly believe in the power of the scouting program in helping girls learn important life skills, build confidence and self-esteem, and create life-long friendships. Scouting is a platform that has allowed our troop to experience new and unique activities like Kindness Rocks and interacting with female executives in STEM professions. It has also created opportunities for us to participate in meaningful community service projects such as making blankets for young cancer patients and spending a day dancing and doing crafts with seniors in a Nursing Home. My incredible troop of girls have earned the Presidential Volunteer Service Award, gone on multiple fieldtrips and annual campouts, participated and performed in every World Thinking Day so far representing different countries, and earned numerous badges including woodworking, geocaching, ariel yoga, car care, and more. But most importantly, we have built an amazing bond as a GS family!
Girl Scouting has been a passionate tradition in my family. Both my mother and mother-in-law were actively engaged with Girl Guides abroad during their childhood. My sisters and I experienced the community of scouting as we bridged from Brownies to Ambassadors. Now, I watch my own daughter’s eyes widen with excitement every time we head out for a GS meeting. It is an honor to be part of this incredible organization that teaches values and good character to our daughters through the GS Promise and Law, of being kind, honest, respectful to self and others, responsible, engaging in service, and helping people at all times.
I am very excited to be reaching for a personal goal of running the Chicago Marathon as part of the 2018 Girl Scouts Go-Getter Team! Although I have run smaller races in the past, running a marathon is definitely going to be a challenge and a test of endurance. I want to show my daughter and my troop that anything you set your mind to is achievable with hard work and determination. I’m proud to be running with the GCNWI Girl Scouts team so that it can continue to support troops and the 52,000 girls in our areas become the leaders of tomorrow!
Please join me in supporting Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana as we strive to empower girls to make the world a better place! Thank you for supporting my run. And thank you for believing in our girls!
